SM GUUN pushes waste transformation and circularity

Developing markets for recovered materials remains a crucial step in achieving a waste-free future. In the Philippines, SM GUUN Environmental Company, Inc. (SM GUUN), a joint venture between SM Prime Holdings, Inc. and Japan’s GUUN Co., is moving forward with an initiative that redefines how waste is managed.

The company’s new model creates a collaborative ecosystem for waste transformation and circularity. By working with circularity partners, SM GUUN aims to reimagine waste as a renewable resource.

Circularity in Action
SM GUUN brings together technology innovators, manufacturers, policymakers, and community organizations. Together, they are scaling advanced recycling, upcycling, and waste-to-energy solutions. The goal is to reduce landfill use, minimize environmental impact, and build sustainable value chains.

The initiative goes beyond disposal and focuses on circular value creation. It promotes economic opportunity, lowers emissions, and encourages social inclusion. Partnerships are at the center of this approach, making circularity systemic and sustainable.

A Blueprint for the Future
In Asia, developing end markets for recovered materials is still new. Businesses need demand for recycled inputs to make waste transformation work. SM GUUN sees this as both a challenge and an opportunity.

According to SM GUUN President George Cheung, investing in infrastructure that can process raw materials is still in its early stages. Having partners committed to innovation and purpose ensures progress toward a waste-free future.

SM Prime continues to advance sustainability through the SM Green Movement, focusing on waste management, water stewardship, and energy efficiency. With growing global pressure on climate and ESG goals, SM GUUN’s model offers a blueprint for sustainable growth. The company positions itself at the forefront of the circular economy transition, showing how collective action can transform waste into resources.
