PRIME Holdings, Inc., through SM Supermalls, in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and ARISE Philippines, officially launched the first-ever SM Sustainability Expo (SUSTEX 2025) at SMX Convention Center Aura, Taguig.
The two-day event carried the theme “Innovation for Environmental Stewardship” and gathered more than 50 exhibitors, government leaders, private sector partners, and sustainability advocates. The Expo became a platform for real solutions, showcasing green technologies and innovations for a resilient future.
Symbolic Opening: Beat of Sustainability
The ceremonial opening featured the “Beat of Sustainability,” led by DOST Secretary Renato Solidum and SM Prime Executive Committee Chairman Hans T. Sy. They struck the Solidrum, a bamboo drum shell developed by DOST-FPRDI, alongside SM executives and dignitaries who played the angklung, symbolizing harmony and collective action.
Leadership Perspectives
Hans T. Sy emphasized that sustainability is at the core of SM’s business model. He highlighted the importance of private-public collaboration in addressing urgent environmental challenges.
Secretary Solidum echoed the call, stressing that science should be translated into real solutions. “Through OneDOST4U, we make science felt and lived by communities. Enough talk—we need measurable results and businesses setting tangible goals,” he said.
Innovation Marketplace
The Expo featured breakthrough initiatives, including:
– SM Prime x GUUN: “Waste-Free Future” campaign on advanced waste management.
– ARISE Philippines: Programs on disaster resilience through private sector leadership.
– DENR: Loop Forward Program for circular economy and waste reduction.
– DOST-FPRDI: Sustainable furniture, essential oils, and bamboo instruments.
– DOST-CHRG: Innovations in electric vehicle technology.
A Catalyst for Action
Held from August 29 to 30, SUSTEX 2025 combined product showcases, knowledge exchanges, and interactive sessions. It reinforced SM’s roadmap to sustainability, including its Waste-Free Future campaign and its target of Net Zero by 2040.
Hans T. Sy concluded, “May this Expo be more than an event. May it be a catalyst for collaboration and proof that business, when guided by purpose and discipline, can be a force for good.”
Celebrating 40 Super Years, SM Supermalls continues to integrate green design, energy efficiency, disaster resilience, and inclusive spaces into its 88 malls across the Philippines—proving that sustainability and community growth go hand in hand.
