In a significant move towards sustainable public transportation, the first self-driving bus in the Philippines has been launched at New Clark City, Clark Freeport Zone, and Clark International Airport. This pioneering project, led by Zenmov and MC Metro Transport Operation, is now offering free rides until June 2025. The self-driving buses, equipped with cutting-edge Japanese technology, are set to revolutionize the commuting experience in the area.
The initiative is backed by a memorandum of agreement signed in October 2023 between BCDA, Zenmov, MC Metro, and NEDO, which will fund the self-driving vehicle mobility demonstration program until 2025. The project aims to showcase the potential of autonomous vehicles in improving public transportation.
BCDA Executive Vice President and COO, Gisela Kalalo, expressed enthusiasm about the integration of Japanese transport technology, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on reducing traffic congestion and promoting a low-carbon environment. “We can definitely learn a lot from Japan’s advanced and innovative transport system. Integrating their smart autonomous vehicle technology will provide a more sustainable and scalable transport solution here in Clark,” she said.
As part of this initiative, BCDA plans to deploy the Smart Mobility Operation Cloud to run the Primary Rapid Transit system, enhancing the “last mile” connectivity for commuters in New Clark City and beyond. The goal is to establish Clark as a model for smart and sustainable urban transportation, supporting greener city development and efficient daily commutes.
