In a groundbreaking fusion of tradition and modern technology, the City Government of San Fernando, in collaboration with Firefly Electric and Lighting Corporation (FELCO) and local lantern makers, unveiled the first-ever LED Giant Lantern. This remarkable project follows their successful partnership during the 2023 Giant Lantern Festival (GLF).
On the evening of July 1, 2024, the LED Giant Lantern illuminated the GL and Tourist Information Center (GLTIC) at the former Paskuhan Village. The ceremonial light-up event was led by Mayor Vilma Balle-Caluag, City Councilor Reggie David, FELCO’s Category Manager Eljay Andrada, and renowned lantern makers Arnel and Mark Niño Flores, the father-son team behind the innovative design.
Mayor Caluag highlighted that this project underscores the ongoing preservation and recognition of San Fernando’s esteemed lantern makers. She also emphasized the city’s confidence in its private sector partners, particularly FELCO, which plays a crucial role as a technical consultant ensuring electrical standards through ROYU Electrical.
FELCO noted that this project aligns with Mayor Caluag’s vision of transforming San Fernando into a smart, green, and sustainable city. The use of LED bulbs in the giant lantern brings significant environmental benefits, including reduced electricity consumption and increased energy efficiency, along with cost-effective and long-lasting features.
The impressive 20-foot-tall LED Giant Lantern, accompanied by a smaller version, will be on display at the GLTIC, as announced by City Tourism and Investment Promotions Officer Ching Pangilinan. These displays will be accessible to the public, with specific viewing schedules to be announced separately.
Despite the advanced technology of LED bulbs, the giant lantern retains its traditional operation, being manually controlled by humans through its rotors.
Firefly’s dedication to the community was previously demonstrated in 2023 when they donated 13,000 bulbs to the participating barangays in the GLF. Additionally, ROYU conducted its Power Electrician Program in April, providing training to lantern makers and CGSFP employees involved in electrical work.
The ceremonial light-up was attended by various barangay officials, other lantern makers, and CGSFP department heads, marking a significant milestone in San Fernando’s ongoing celebration of its rich cultural heritage infused with innovative advancements.
